Sci-fi: Something to watch

Sense8 (Netflix original series)(2014):

Wachowski’s

Netflix is announcing it will release a new, 10-part sci-fi series called “Sense 8.” Details are scarce, but it’s described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.” It’s the project of sibling directors Andy and Lana Wachowski along with Joe Straczynski. They say the idea for the series came a few years ago after a talk about “the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us.” The plot is about a group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order.

Jupiter Ascending(2014)

Wachowski’s

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Transcendence (2014)

Two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.

Real Humans (2012)

Real Humans (Swedish title: Äkta människor) is a 2012 Swedish science fiction/drama series set in an alternate version of modern day Sweden where humanoid robot workers and servants are widespread. The series follows the resulting emotional effects on two families as well as the trials of a group of robots who have attained free will and want their freedom from human ownership.

Her (2013)

Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, “her” follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.
